Getting Past Twitter Noise to Useful Information

My Twitter

My Twitter

There is a lot of noise in social networking. I mean a lot! But the definition of noise depends entirely on personal opinion. What one perceives as noise, another will find valuable or enjoyable. When I first created a Twitter account, it seemed like all noise. I have a Facebook (FB) account, and Twitter simply seemed a repeat of the status line in FB. Why read tweets of the same nature?

But friends and colleagues lauded the value of the popular Twitter, and so I decided to stick with it awhile and see if I could get past my idea of tweet nonsense. I explored other types of tweets besides those of friends and made use of the Search engine.

One of the most valuable tweets I’m getting are in the area of business. I’ve subscribed to companies like Linden Labs and Collabnet for updates and new releases or patches. I wish more companies were tweeting in this way. I’d like to have tweets for software I use, such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Firefox. Perhaps one day someone at Adobe and other software companies will do a better job of tweeting.

In the meantime, I have saved searches on software I use and I get a lot of useful tips from other users, opinions, and recommendations on using these applications.

I’ve also discovered a creative and fun use of Twitter, but I’m definitely not the first! Humans are not the only ones to have Twitter accounts. So do fictional characters.

Recently, I tried role playing in a Star Wars SIM in Second Life, and really took to it in a big way. I created the character Arlyn Pleides, who is a Togruta from the planet Shili. In Star Wars her name was Shaak TI. This role playing speaks to my love of fiction writing, so I’ve been immersed in this Star Wars fun. I got the idea to let Arlyn tweet about her adventures in becoming a Jedi, and discovered that other Tweeters are doing the same thing! I discovered that I have Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Obi Won Konobi following Arlyn’s tweets, along with many other RPer’s like myself.

One of the most intriguing tweets I’ve come across is one by one of NASA‘s astronauts.

In Mike’s last post, he said that he’ll be tweeting from his next space mission. Now that has a coolness factor that most tweets don’t have. I’m looking forward to seeing what kinds of tweets he sends!

Yes, I can see the value of Twitter as a “source,” and I assume there are tweets in my area of interest. Presently, I’m treading through the mud of FB and blogging and seem to have no time to write/rewrite.
