Making Myself at Home in Second Life
As some of you may know from my previous post,
The movie screen was the first prim I made, and it worked. I was really excited. But upon new visits, I discovered my video no longer working. As it turned out, YouTube has a short expiration date on it’s MP4 movies. Argh. So, I resolved the problem by shopping again, and buying a TV that has scripts to by pass this issue.
You really can buy everything you need from roaming pets to stationary trees and benches. The Object Editor is super easy and cool to use. I’m very impressed with the Linden Labs tools and documentation.
Next, I want to learn the Linden scripting language, as I learn to create prims and animate them. The editor is easy to use, the language is not entirely unlike Java, and it’s easy to attach the script to the object.
The third party open source tools that can be used for creating 3D objects also look like a lot of fun to learn. And importing is easy, but does cost you 10L each time. It can add up if you are doing a lot of building from outside, or creating outside textures then importing.
My property is to a point where I feel like I can leave it as is for a little while, and dig into the programming aspects and just experiment now. It’s neat to have a place I can call home in SL. And, of course, all of you are invited to come check it out!
When you visit, you can:
- Watch cool videos in my house, sit in front of the fire, prostrate to the Dalai Lama
- Sit outside by the seal pond
- Relax in front of the ocean
- Meditate at the Buddha fountain, or in the the butterfly chair
- Mediate underwater in the kelp garden!
Go to:

I don’t have to be there, and my front door is unlocked. Just click the door. To choose a video to play, right-click the screen and select Touch. You’ll get a selection to choose from.
I also want to point out that here in Second Life, I have really great neighbors, and I don’thave to worry about unwanted fences. There is much peace to be had in this virtual world, and many place to mediate and relax.
Have fun! Dana
